Tokyo now No. 1 destination for Singaporean Easter holiday travellers

With the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday break now behind them, Singaporean holidaymakers are now firmly focused on planning for the upcoming Easter holiday break. Kayak (kayak.sg), the world’s leading travel search engine, analysed millions of searches on its site to better understand where Singaporeans are hoping to travel to for Easter.

Kayak’s analysis has revealed that Tokyo, Seoul and Bangkok remain the top three most-searched destinations for Singaporeans to visit over the Easter holidays, with Tokyo overtaking last year’s most-popular destination, Bangkok, to take first place on this year’s list.

Flight prices for many of the most popular destinations have increased, with eight of the top 10 destinations showing a year-on-year increase in average flight prices and only Kuala Lumpur (-27% year-on-year) and Phuket (-13% year-on-year) becoming cheaper.

However, in spite of rising flight prices, Singaporean travellers are showing no signs of slowing down, with nine out of the top 10 destinations showing a significant increase in search volume compared to last year.

Bangkok, the only exception, had a slight dip in search volume, down 1% since last year. However, searches for each of the other top destinations rose at least 19%, with Perth (+193% year-on-year) and Osaka (+175% year-on-year) showing massive upward trajectories.

Whey Han Tan, Regional Manager, Southeast Asia of Kayak, said: “Our data indicates that Easter is becoming an important holiday for Singaporeans to take advantage of, with searches for the most popular destinations increasing even as prices have risen compared to last year. Japanese destinations are as popular as ever, with Osaka nearly tripling its 2017 search volume for the Easter period.

“Meanwhile, anyone looking for a budget getaway might find it a good time to visit Kuala Lumpur or Phuket to take advantage of slightly cheaper prices this year.”

In addition to Easter, March and April is peak cherry blossom season, giving Singaporeans even more incentive to visit some of the top regional destinations.
