Dancehall lovers in Singapore will have a reason to celebrate this week. Rawq, a collective of three local dancehall enthusiasts, will be presenting Bashment People’s Party, from January 19 to 21.
Scheduled to be held over three days, this dance event will consist of two enriching master classes at O School, *Scape by internationally renowned choreographer and Juste Debout finalist Katrin Wow. The entire event will culminate in a 1v1 dancehall battle and after party at Hard Rock Cafe Singapore.
“Bashment People’s Party is a movement for positive dancehall experiences. Every event aims to give participants a unique experience,” said Carol from Rawq. “The purpose of organising these workshops and the dancehall battle, in particular, is to allow youths to undergo intensive dance education, specifically in the dancehall genre.”
Three-Day Event
Bashment People’s Party will kick off with two days of workshops by Katrin. The master classes will be exploring different aspects of dancehall, with one focusing on queen style whilst the other focuses on dancehall as a whole, touching on the history and techniques of the genre. The former will be an occasion in itself, celebrating women, “Queens”, complete with a complimentary glass of Moscato for a few lucky dancers.
The battle and after-party segments are further elevated amidst the setting of Hard Rock Cafe, an established haven for fans of music and good food. As the official party venue, Hard Rock Café allows for an enhanced experience for everyone present, adding a fitting touch of rock and roll to the event. “Hard Rock Cafe Singapore is the perfect venue for events of this nature sand we will want you to experience this for yourself,” said by Natalie Wee, PR Manager for Hard Rock Cafe Singapore. With the steady growth of Singapore’s dancehall community, top overseas talents such as Katrin bring with them a fresh perspective to the local dance scene, especially with their high level of expertise and artistry. This, coupled with a battle platform and expected turnout of more than 30 participants and 150 people overall, provides a unique experience. Not only will battle participants engage their peers, they will also be able to apply what they have learnt in the presence of an expert and receive valuable individual feedback.
The Bashment People’s Party is the latest in a series of efforts from the local dancehall scene, focused on advancing their craft as a community and elevating the urban dance standards in Singapore. Past events include Laure Courtellemont’s dancehall workshop and battle in 2016, which had an overall outreach of 200 people and, more recently, Majulah Bashment in 2017, which engaged over 250 youths through workshops and a 2v2 dancehall battle.
With the idea of celebrating the vibrancy of Singapore’s dance culture and engaging youths in action, both participants and partygoers can look forward to an exhilarating experience.
