Where to go for good luck this year?

It is well known that 2018 is the Chinese Year of the Dog. While the Lunar New Year celebration starts on 15 February, according to feng shui theory, your good luck for the year starts from Lichun (beginning of spring in the traditional East Asian calendar), which this year falls on 4 February.

So, where should you aim to travel this year for some good luck? Kayak, the world’s leading search engine asked Hong Kong feng shui master Tong Wong, and he gave a few tips based on “flying star” feng shui.

Here are some fun and handy travelling tips for each Chinese zodiac sign:

Dog (2018, 2006, 1994, 1982, 1970, 1958):

Welcome to your year. Boost your luck further by travelling to the northwest – perhaps you will find a bone or two in cities like Florence, Mumbai, Dubai, Athens, Istanbul, Cairo, Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin, Rome, Zurich, Prague, Reykjavik or London.

Rat (2008, 1996, 1984, 1972, 1960, 1948):

Rats should avoid travelling north this year. Destinations that you may want to save for next year include Beijing, Mongolia and the Russian Far East. Instead, aim your compass southwest or northeast to one of these destinations for extraordinary experiences in 2018: Cape Town, Port Louis, Mauritius, Macau, Shanghai, Taichung, Kota Kinabalu.

Ox (2009, 1997, 1985, 1973, 1961, 1949):

This year, the mighty Ox will plow ahead and travel wherever it wants to. If you want an extra boost to your luck, travel somewhere to the northeast, such as these hot spots: Brunei, Kota Kinabalu, Boracay, Taipei, Osaka, Tokyo, Shanghai.

Tiger (2010, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962, 1950):

To make the most of 2018, tigers should head either southwest or northeast. Luckily this leaves them plenty of juicy destinations to sink their teeth into: Cape Town, Port Louis, Mauritius, Macau, Shanghai, Taichung, Kota Kinabalu.

Rabbit (2011, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963, 1951):

The Year of the Dog is a year of good luck for you. Apparently there are many carrots in your future, particularly in the southwest and northwest. Why not hop over to Pekanbaru, Padang, Mont Lubin, Cape Town, Port Louis, the Maldives, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Dubai, Istanbul or London?

One last tip for the bunnies – if you’re a rabbit-entrepreneur or are single and looking for some luck in love, go somewhere southeast. A few ideas: Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania, Auckland.

Dragon (2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964, 1952):

Evil hobbitses are teeming in the northwest, so avoid destinations such as the Maldives, Dubai, Copenhagen, Istanbul, London, Edinburgh and Scotland lest they steal your treasure. Instead, travel southeast to find better fortune in places like Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania or Auckland.

Snake (2013, 2001, 1989, 1977, 1965, 1953):

You’re in luck – nowhere is off-limits for serpents during the Year of the Dog. Snakes should feel free to slither to anywhere they like this year, but, for a boost of extra luck, the best directions for you are northeast and northwest. Nha Trang, Sanya, Macau, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taichung, Boracay, Kota Kinabalu, Mumbai, Dubai, Athens, Istanbul, Cairo, Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin, Rome, Zurich, Prague, Reykjavik, London.

Horse (2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966, 1954):

Lucky directions for you this year are northwest or northeast. Horses who travel with friends born in the Year of the Tiger will enjoy extra hay this year. So, find a stripy friend and gallop along to these hotspots for a prosperous year: Istanbul, St Petersburg, Prague, Berlin, Manchester, Dublin, Reykjavik, Nha Trang, Sanya, Macau, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taichung, Boracay, Kota Kinabalu.

Goat (2015, 2003, 1991, 1979, 1967, 1955):

Those born in the Year of the Goat are kind, calm and less assertive. But this is your year to take a chance, as there are no baa-a-a-ad directions for goats to travel this year. Go wherever your heart takes you in 2018. For an extra lucky trip, your best chances lie northeast and south. Northeast destinations: Boracay, Taipei, Osaka, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung. South destinations: Sentosa, Jakarta, Palembang, Christmas Island.

Monkey (2016, 2004, 1992, 1980, 1968, 1956):

Plenty of bananas lie in the southwest this year. Time to plan your travel to destinations like Cape Town, Port Louis, Mauritius, Macau, Shanghai, Taichung, Kota Kinabalu. South is also a great direction for monkeys to swing to if you want to boost fame or wealth. Possible destinations include Sentosa, Jakarta, Palembang, Christmas Island.

Rooster (2017, 2005, 1993, 1981, 1969, 1957):

Cocks normally crow when the sun rises in the east, but, if you are an adventurous Rooster, 2018 is the year to try something different when you travel. This year, travel to the west would be your best option, so why not take advantage with a special trip to Africa or South America? Male, Colombo, Kochi, Kenya, Tanzania, Lima, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires.

Pig (2019, 2007, 1995, 1983, 1971, 1958):

Too lazy to wallow your way around the world? Then make 2018 a year of short-haul travel. Favourable directions for you this year are southeast, south and southwest. Try planning a trip to Bali, Bandung, Adelaide, Perth, Christchurch, Jakarta, Palembang, Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania, Auckland.
