Q & A WITH MASABA
Q: Why fashion?
A: My mentor at college – Wendell Rodricks – saw my collection and he believed that I was ready to take my step and motivated me to register for LFW. I applied for the same collection that I presented at college. I remember I was in second year of my college then but I’ve liked to do things at the right time, when they work most. Kattran means scaps of fabrics, which I usedfor my collection and thus made it cost effective. When I saw the response and reaction to my LFW show, I realised that buyers are keen on buying my design. Not giving it another thought, I hit the iron hot and started my label at home.
Q: What will you be showing in Singapore and the inspiration behind it?
A: I am so looking forward to presenting my debut solo at Yantra and meeting many of you in Singapore. The collection I will be showcasing will be a mix of summer and festive wear. It will also have an assortment of the most iconic prints we have created in the past three months.
Q: What are the key influences on your designs?
A: Key influences on my designs are always my experiences. It could be travels/music/someone I met/a show I am watching/a quote I read or a scent also. If it entices a reaction in me I am inspired and then my whole world revolves around it for a while.
Q: Would you give up your fashion career to pursue any other interest?
A: I wouldn’t give up fashion ever. While I may do other things. This gave me life, so I’d never quit.
Q: What do you think is the current trend in fashion now and what is your opinion on
it?
A: The current fashion trend is anything that’s rebellious and everything is OTT. So super sculpted bodies/crazy hair/crazy nails/or adding an accessory you thought will never go with anything.
Q: What does colour mean to you?
A: Colour means expression to me, the best form A: Colour means expression to me, the best form of saying what you feel.
Q: Fashion and body positivity. You have been such a huge champion of that. Was there
ever a time you were uncomfortable with your body type and what it takes to embrace
who you are?
A: I’ve always been uncomfortable with my body I struggle with it even today on most days.
It takes waking up every day and allowing the right things to fill your mind every morning
until one day, it all makes sense
